Reps. Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann vote against continuing resolution

The State Column | Friday, April 08, 2011

Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Minnesota Rep. Ron Paul voted against a proposed continuing resolution Thursday, saying the House must agree to a federal budget.

The bill, passed Thursday afternoon on a 247 to 181 vote, will fund the government for a week as Congressional leaders continue to negotiate a budget resolution.

Both Ms. Bachmann and Mr. Paul as considered potential presidential candidates. Ms. Bachmann expressed her disappointment with the measure, saying it did little to address health care.

“I had previously pledged to reject any [budget bill] which does not defund that spending,” Ms. Bachmann said in a statement. “Unfortunately, today’s [bill] does nothing to defund ObamaCare and that is why I voted ‘no’.”

House Speaker John Boehner put forth the proposal late Wednesday after meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama at the White House. Mr. Boehner says he is pushing for additional spending cuts. Mr. Boehner put forth the continuing resolution as an alternative to a government shutdown.

Mr. Obama issues a threat of a veto, saying he opposed any additional continuing resolutions.
