Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s Saturday birthday bash has left the Republican presidential candidate with an additional $1.5 million.
The Texas Republican, who launched a “moneybomb” Saturday, raised nearly $1.5 million, providing him with a solid war chest as the campaign in Iowa continues.
Mr. Paul, who has made his “moneybombs” an major component of his campaign, announced the fundraiser on Facebook, calling on supporters to contribute. Within hours Mr. Paul had raised over $250,00.
“My birthday has just started and already we’ve raised over $270,000! I am leaving a great campaign event in Florida, and hope the ticker moves up a lot during my plane ride. I’ll be eager to check it on my iPad when I get to Texas,” Mr. Paul wrote in a message on Facebook. Wow, what a wonderful birthday gift…Please spread the word, tell all your friends and consider chipping in right now!”
The fundraiser comes just hours as Mr. Paul, who spent Saturday campaigning in Florida, captured the support of the New Hampshire Young Republicans in a poll.
Meanwhile, Mr. Paul continues to trail in a series of recently released polls that show the Texas congressman trailing Texas governor Rick Perry and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Mr. Paul has expressed confidence in his ability to capture the Republican presidential nomination following a key showing in the Ames Republican Presidential Straw Poll, which placed Mr. Paul closely behind Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
The Texas Republican congressman, who slammed the media’s response to the poll, called on supporters Saturday to help the campaign reach $2 million.
“Let’s raise the cash takes to go around the establishment and talk directly to the people. Please contribute to our money bomb right now!” Mr. Paul said.
