Abortion bill heads to Gov. Sam Brownback

The State Column | Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Kansas governor Sam Brownback is slated to sign a controversial abortion bill into law after the Kansas Legislature passed the bill Tuesday.

The Kansas House voted 100-22 on Tuesday to accept the state Senate’s version of the bill, allowing it to clear the Legislature. The House passed the bill first, and the Senate made minor amendments.

The Kansas Republican has expressed support the measure and will likely sign the bill into law. The Republican governor has called on lawmakers to create what he called a culture of life.

The proposed bill will require doctors to obtain permission from both parents before allowing minors to seek an abortion.

Critics of the proposal say the measure violates privacy rights, while supporters say the measure will deter those seeking abortions.
