Gov. Robert Bentley congratulates Alabama football

The State Column | Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley congratulated Alabama football via Twitter Tuesday. After the Alabama football program won the BCS national championship game, Mr. Bentley tweeted: “Proud of the Alabama Crimson Tide winning the National title. The crystal trophy stays in the state for the 3rd straight year.”

Prior to the start of the BCS national championship game, Mr. Bentley tweeted his support to the Crimson Tide: “Good luck to the Alabama Crimson Tide in tonight’s BCS Championship Game. Lets keep the crystal trophy in Alabama.”

Mr. Bentley’s tweets may not have had anything to do with the Alabama football program’s victory over LSU Monday night, but it underscored the fact that the entire state of Alabama was under Nick Saban’s spell. The Alabama football program defeated LSU 21-0 in a lopsided contest that featured five field goals and one touchdown.

According to the Associated Press, the Alabama football program’s matchup with LSU pulled in the second-lowest ratings of the 14 BCS title games. ESPN’s broadcast of the BCS national championship game earned a 14.0 rating.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports posited that “it was a college football season besieged by scandal and controversy, week after week of NCAA infractions, conference realignment back stabbings and sexual molestation charges.” Mr. Wetzel added that the BCS national championship game “got a championship game befitting of the unpleasantness.”
