Alaska officials to release Sarah Palin emails by May

The State Column | Friday, January 28, 2011

Alaska officials must release by the end of May an estimated 26,500 pages of emails exchanged between former Governor Sarah Palin and her aides, the state’s attorney general has determined.

In a letter sent to Alaska Governor Sean Parnell, the state’s attorney general noted an “unequivocal expectation that all requested records that are not privileged will be provided no later than May 31, 2011.”

The records release comes after nearly three years. The initial request was made back when Ms. Palin was running for vice president with Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain. The request include emails between Ms. Palin and her husband, Todd, who was accused of wielding inappropriate governmental powers.

Alaska state officials said the records request would exceed its capacity, noting the need to hire experts to determine whether come of the information is legally privileged and should be redacted.

The move comes as Ms. Palin continues to consider a run for president. The former Alaska governor has face criticism in recent weeks over her political action committee’s use of a target on its website. Ms. Palin’s response to the criticism also received scorn and critique.
