Andrew Cuomo to Democrats: ‘I am the government’

The State Column | Thursday, November 10, 2011

New York Democratic governor Andrew Cuomo praised state Democrats on Thursday, saying Tuesday’s electoral victories prove the party is moving in the correct direction.

“I think there was a common denominator,” Mr. Cuomo said on WGDJ-AM. The New York Democrat said the candidates he supported “stressed the ability to manage government, the efficiency and the effectiveness of government, without sacrificing the goal and the purpose and the raison d’être of government.”

The New York governor, who took office in 2010, said the latest electoral victories in New York served as a mandate for his administration, downplaying recent polls that show New York government remains widely unpopular throughout the state.

“I am the government,” Mr. Cuomo said.

Mr. Cuomo’s comment comes as state budget officials said Wednesday that they still did not have a timetable for releasing updated financial figures. Asked to comment on the latest financial reports, Mr. Cuomo would only say only that the figures, when they are finally released, would be “grim.”

“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t say the numbers are worrisome and doesn’t say the numbers are dropping off rapidly, which is mirroring what’s happening nationwide,” Mr. Cuomo said.
