The wife of Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry conceded Tuesday that the 2012 race for the Republican presidential nomination has taken a toll.
Asked on Tuesday whether the 2012 race has taken a toll on her, Ms. Perry told Politico that the national scrutiny and the media attention was a toll.
“The national scrutiny, the media, the tearing away layer by layer and really examining everything,” said Ms. Perry.
She added, “But I think that’s good — the American people need to know who’s out there running and take a hard look at the man that wants to lead the greatest country in the world.”
The wife of Governor Rick Perry said the 2012 race has left her husband a better candidate. Ms. Perry did not hint at whether Mr. Perry would seek the presidency if he lost he Iowa caucus on Tuesday and was forced to withdraw from the race.
“He’s so much improved. He’s so much better. And I’m not near as nervous as I used to be [watching him]. In fact, I’ve really enjoyed them because I’m seeing him excel now and we’re going to do two debates this weekend in New Hampshire and I think he’s excited about it, too,” said Ms. Perry.
Recent polls show Mr. Perry lagging far behind the rest of the Republican field. The Texas Republican has struggled in a series of recent debates, struggling to recall key policies.
