Facing criticism from Mississippi Democrats, Mississippi governor Haley Barbour is canceling a string of speaking engagements in New Hampshire.
The Republican governor, who is facing criticism for his frequent out-of-state trips ahead of the 2012 Republican presidential campaign, said Friday he will cut back on his travel.
“It’s important to be home so that the public has the facts and does not get misled by bad information,” Barbour spokeswoman Laura Hipp said Friday.
Mr. Barbour, who is considering a run for president, is scheduled to deliver a speech in Iowa on Saturday.
Mississippi Democrats had complained that frequent trips out of state have hampered budget negotiations. Mr. Barbour’s nephew and political strategist, Henry Barbour, said the claim was unfounded and that he governor has been in touch via phone while traveling.
Mr. Barbour has said in the past that is his potential run for president would not take place until after the current legislative session has ended, which is scheduled for April.
