Bill Maher bets David Letterman that Donald Trump runs for president

The State Column | Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Appearing on “The Late Show” Monday night, HBO’s Bill Maher bet CBS’ David Letterman a week’s salary that Donald Trump will run for president.

“Let’s wager a week’s pay. Mine against yours,” Mr. Maher said. Mr. Letterman seemed interested, noting, “Will you throw in some steaks?”

Mr. Maher said he expects Mr. Trump to enter the race due to his ego, age and the fact that he has the cash to fund a campaign. Mr. Letterman insisted that Mr. Trump’s latest pitch to voters is simply a publicity stunt.

The wager comes as Mr. Trump continues to float the possibility of a presidential campaign. The New York Republican is prepared to travel to a number of primary states in the coming weeks, including New Hampshire and Nevada.

Mr. Maher is the latest celebrity (and comedian) to offer his take on a Trump candidacy. Comedian Bill Cosby also offered his take, telling Mr. Trump to “shut up.” Jerry Seinfeld withdrew from a fundraiser hosted by Mr. Trump’s son after the Donald begin questioning the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate.
