Brian Sandoval's endorsement of Rick Perry means little in Nevada caucus

The State Column | Friday, February 03, 2012

Nevada Republican Governor Brian Sandoval will have little impact on the outcome of Saturday’s Nevada caucus.

The Nevada Republican, who endorsed Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry in 2011, has seen his favored candidate exit the race, leaving him little option but to sit out of Saturday’s election.

While Mr. Sandoval has invited the candidates to his office this week as they campaign ahead of Saturday’s caucuses, the four candidates — Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum — are unlikely to walk away with little more than a commitment for support.

The Nevada Republican has pledged hid “full support” to whomever wins the Republican Party nomination, and he has recorded an automated phone message urging Nevada Republicans to vote in the caucuses. Beyond that Mr. Sandoval is likely to remain on the sidelines.

Mr. Gingrich asked to meet with the Nevada Republican earlier this week, but the former House speaker’s campaign canceled Wednesday’s meeting minutes after it was announced by the governor’s office, citing a scheduling conflict.

Mr. Sandoval’s role comes as Mr. Perry announced in late January that he would forgo his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, citing plunging poll numbers and defeats in early primary states, including Iowa and New Hampshire.
