New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie will reportedly plan a public tribute for famed performer Whitney Houston, who died Saturday at the age of 48.

“Obviously, Whitney Houston was an important part of the fabric – the cultural fabric of this state,” Mr. Christie said at a press conference Tuesday, adding that Houston, a Newark native, is in the “pantheon of great New Jersey musical talents” like Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen.

“Her terribly premature death is an awful loss for her family and the incredible New Jersey musical family,” he said. “Our prayers are with her family,” the New Jersey Republican added.

The New Jersey Republican said he has been on contact with Ms. Houston’s family, adding that state officials will likely coordinate with Newark Mayor Cory Booker and other Newark city officials to allow fans to pay their tributes.

Reports of a massive Michael Jacskon-like public memorial service at the Prudential Center were downplayed by Mr. Booker’s administration on Tuesday, whcih said city officials would respect the wishes of the Houston family.

“In compliance with the family’s wishes the city is not moving forward with any public ceremony,” said Mr. Booker’s spokesman.

The invitation-only funeral will take place Saturday at noon at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. The body of Ms. Houston was flown back to Newark, New Jersey, late Monday night.
