Chris Christie sits down with Oprah

The State Column | Wednesday, January 11, 2012

New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie revealed his lifelong battle with his weight, and what he truly thinks about President Barack Obama in a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Mr. Christie has been very visible on the campaign trail with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in recent weeks, and stopped by Oprah to give the public a closer look into his personal life. The interview will air this Sunday on Oprah’s OWN Network.

“The guilt that I feel is in regard to my children, like, that I wish that I could get better control of it, just for my own health, and my own future, with them,” said Mr. Christie.

Last summer, after being hospitalized for shortness of breath, the New Jersey first term governor told reporters that he has a desire to exercise more, and lose some weight in an effort to show people in the public that he is in fact disciplined.

“I would love to show these people who say that because I’m overweight that means I’m not disciplined,” said the New Jersey governor. “They think you could get to where I am by being undisciplined? Let me show them.”

In 2010, Mr. Christie became the first Republican to be elected the governor of New Jersey in 13 years. His popularity in the Republican party increased, primarily because of his no nonsense style, and the massive spending cuts he made in his state.

Although his statements on the campaign trail were staunchly against everything that President Barack Obama stands for, Mr. Christie was complimentary of Mr. Obama on Oprah’s show.

“Those who underestimate Barack Obama underestimate him at their own peril. He’s as good of a politician as I’ve ever seen,” said Mr. Christie.
