Poll: Gingrich's support slipping as Paul rises

A newly released CNN poll finds Texas Congressman Ron Paul on the rise, taking third place in the latest poll released by the news organization.

The poll, released Tuesday, finds the Texas Republican in third place, trailing former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

According to the poll, Mr. Paul has the support of 14 percent of respondents, while Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich are locked in a statistical tie. The poll indicates that 28 percent of Republicans and independents who lean towards the Republican Party say the former House speaker is their choice for their party’s nominee, with an equal amount supporting Mr. Romney.

The poll reflects a steep decline in support for Mr. Gingrich’s candidacy, while Mr. Paul has show an surge in support in recent weeks. The latest polls numbers show a five point rise for Mr. Paul since last month’s poll.

Among the other candidates in the Republican field, the founds Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota at 8 percent, Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry at 7 percent, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at 4 percent, former Utah Governor and former ambassador to China Jon Huntsman at 2 percent, and nine percent undecided.

The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International from Dec. 16 to 18, with 1,015 adult Americans, including 436 Republicans and independents who lean Republican and 497 Democrats and independents who lean towards the Democratic party, questioned by telephone. The survey’s overall sampling error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
