The West Virginia Coal Association announced Tuesday its endorsement of Senate President/acting Governor Earl Ray Tomblin in the governor’s race.
In a news release from the Democrat’s campaign, association Chairman Gary White called the endorsement an easy decision.
“He knows coal and West Virginia’s 63,000 coal mining families are in a very real sense his family,” Mr. White said. “He knows how important it is to have a job, to pay your bills and provide for your children. He has always stood with us … not just as a ‘friend’ of coal but as one of us.”
The endorsement comes as Mr. Tomblin attempts to win election to the state’s highest seat. Mr. Tomblin took over after former West Virginia governor Joe Manchin entered the U.S. Senate in 2010.
