Did Gov. Mitch Daniels fire Donald Trump?

The State Column | Tuesday, May 10, 2011

It seems Indiana governor Mitch Daniels may have thwarted a proposed business deal put forth by Donald Trump.

The Indiana governor, and potential Republican presidential candidate, reportedly removed a license for one of Mr. Trump’s casinos in Indiana after he heard Mr. Trump was behind the project. In one of his first acts of governor, Mr. Daniels asked for the resignation of the state gaming commission that approved Trump’s plans for a $108 million casino.

“When I was first elected, he was going to be the operator of one of our casinos and there were problems with it. So we transferred the license to somebody else,” Mr. Daniels said in a radio interview. “Somebody said to me: ‘You’re the first person to say, ‘Donald –- you’re fired.’’”

The revelation comes as both Mr. Daniels and Mr. Trump continue to consider entering the 2012 Republican presidential election. Recent polls show Mr. Trump leading Mr. Daniels in key primary states. The Indiana Republican has said he plans to announce whether he will enter the 2012 campaign in the coming weeks, whle Mr. Trump is expected to announce his decision later this month.
