Donald Trump helping Mitt Romney in Michigan

The State Column | Monday, February 20, 2012

New York real estate mogul Donald Trump spent Monday offering a bit of assistance to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, saying in an interview with a local radio network that former Pennsylvania U./S. Senator Rick Santorum would be a “gift” for President Obama.

Speaking Monday, Mr. Trump told WSGW radio in Saginaw, Michigan, today that Mr. Santorum would be a “gift” to President Obama and the Democratic Party if he were to become the Republican presidential nominee.

Mr. Trump, who announced in May of 2011 that he would not seek the Republican presidential nomination, took time on Monday to slam Mr. Romney’s chief opponent, Mr. Santorum.

“There’s nothing – there’s no gift, no Christmas gift, that could be given better than Rick Santorum to the Democrats,” Mr. Trump said. Democrats, he continued, “are just salivating at that. And, you know, I don’t think they believe it’s going to happen. But boy, would they like it to happen because that would be an easy election.”

The interview is the first indication that Mr. Trump intends to remain a vocal presence in the 2012, despite his decision to remain on the sidelines. That said, it is not surprising. The New York real estate mogul told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer after his endorsement of Mr. Romney that he was willing to do “whatever necessary” to help him, including making speeches on his behalf.
