Donald Trump talks Chris Christie, Herman Cain

The State Column | Monday, October 03, 2011

New York real estate mogul Donald Trump focused on New Jersey Republican governor Chris Christie and former CEO Herman Cain Monday, saying he is content with the current field of Republican presidential candidates.

“I mean, Herman Cain started with very little and look where he’s come and he’s doing really well in the polls. I think he’s done a really terrific job. I look forward to meeting him,” Mr. Trump said on Fox News Monday. “He just seems like a really nice guy and a good character to me.”

Mr. Trump, who has met with nearly every Republican presidential candidate, announced earlier this year that he would not seek the Republican presidential nomination, citing his current role as host of NBC’s “The Apprentice.”

Mr. Trump has met with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Texas Republican governor Rick Perry in recent weeks. The New York Republican has also held meetings with former Utah governor Jon Huntsman and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, who has yet to announce her plans regarding the 2012 race.

Speaking Monday, Mr. Trump said he doubts Mr. Christie will enter the 2012 race, saying he is proud of the New Jersey Republican’s tenure as governor.

“I know him probably as well as anybody, and he’s a great guy — he’s doing a great job,” Mr. Trump said. “I own a lot of property in New Jersey, and I sort of don’t want him to run. He’s doing a good job in New Jersey.”

“I think it’s very late, and I personally don’t think he’s going to run,” Mr. Trump added.
