Donald Trump to endorse Newt Gingrich for president

The State Column | Wednesday, February 01, 2012

New York real estate mogul Donald Trump will reportedly endorse Newt Gingrich for president, according to recent reports.

Mr. Trump, who at one point flirted with a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, is slated to endorse Mr. Gingrich, the former House speaker, during an event in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday.

The television station KLAS in Las Vegas, a CNN affiliate, reported Wednesday Mr. Trump will back Mr. Gingrich. Politico, along with the New York Times, have also indicated that a Trump endorsement will go to the Georgia Republican.

Speaking with reporters in Reno on Wednesday, the former House speaker said he was unaware of Mr. Trump’s plans.

“I have no idea what the Donald is going to do,” said Mr. Gingrich. “He is always interesting, and I don’t know of anybody who does a better job of getting attention by announcing that he will presently announce something.”

Mr. Trump will make the announcement Thursday at Trump International Hotel and Tower in Las Vegas. He’s scheduled to arrive in the city late Wednesday night.

The announcement is slated to “pertain to the presidential race,” according to a statement from his office.
