Early New Hampshire election results show Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman battling for second place.
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who leads the race with 37 percent support, remains well ahead of his Republican opponents. Mr. Paul and Mr. Huntsman are currently battling one another, with Mr. Paul leading Mr. Huntsman by ten percent. Mr. Paul has the support of 24 percent of voters, while Mr. Huntsman has the support of 14 percent.
The ten percent spread between Mr. Huntsman and Mr. Paul represents 1,300 votes.
Speaking to CBS News late Tuesday, Mr. Huntsman said he remains confident that his campaign will secure a victory in New Hampshire.
“I’ve called ourselves the margin-of-error candidate from the very beginning. And I’m the underdog. There’s no doubt about that. I’m a scrapper. I’m a fighter. I’m gonna get out and take that all the way to the finish line<‘ said Mr. Huntsman.
The race for second place comes as Mr. Huntsman has focused his campaign resources on securing a victory in New Hampshire. The Utah Republican is likely to build support as a number of New Hampshire’s larger cities continue to count votes.
