Enzi proposes $1 coins to reduce deficit

The State Column | Wednesday, February 01, 2012

Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi wants to replace dollar bills with coins to reduce the federal deficit.
Enzi is the co-sponsor of a bill introduced Tuesday that would require the switch.

The Casper Star-Tribune (http://bit.ly/xaBSDO) reports that coins circulate an average of 25 years while bills average 4.7 years in circulation. A report from the Government Accountability Office says using coins instead of dollar bills would save about $5.6 billion over 30 years.
