Former Republican presidential candidate Gary Johnson over the weekend called on supporters to back Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul in the Iowa caucus.
“The cause of individual liberty and freedom is bigger and more important than any candidate or campaign,” said Mr. Johnson on Saturday. “I am hopeful that in urging my supporters in Iowa to vote for Ron Paul in the coming caucuses, a victory for the principles we share can be won.”
“We don’t necessarily agree on every single issue. However, on the overriding issues of restoring our economy by cutting out-of-control spending and the need to get back to Constitutional principles in our government, Ron Paul and I are in lock-step,” Mr. Johnson added.
Mr. Johnson announced last month that he would seek the 2012 Libertarian Party nomination, citing disappointment with the Republican Party.
Recently released polls show Mr. Paul tied with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in Iowa. The Texas Republican has sought to translate his wide base of support into votes, calling on supporters to turnout on Tuesday.
