Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal offered his thoughts on raising the nation’s debt limit Friday, writing in an email that President Obama has failed to lead, adding Washington has made “this into a very complicated debate.”
“In Washington they are making this into a very complicated debate. It’s really not. Our unprecedented 14 Trillion dollar debt is endangering not only our future, but also our present,” Mr. Jindal wrote Friday. “Everyone talks about how damaging this debt will be to future generations, and that is true. But it is also damaging our country right this minute.”
The Louisiana Republican said any plan on raising the nation’s debt ceiling must include a balanced budget amendment.
‘Republicans in Washington must insist that any bill to increase the debt ceiling include a Balanced Budget Amendment, caps on spending, and real cuts in federal spending,” Mr. Jindal said.
The Louisiana Republican slammed Democratic lawmakers and Tresury Secretary Timothy Geithner, saying the latter was engaged in “scare tactics.”
Mr. Jindal’s comment came just hours after Mr. Obama held a press conference Friday, offering his thoughts on the current state of talks between Republicans and Democrats.
“I think it’s important for the American people that everybody in this town set politics aside, that everybody in this town sets our individual interests aside, and we try to do some tough stuff,” Mr. Obama said.
The president also issued an ultimatum to Republican lawmakers, saying he expects a deal by Sunday.
