Gov. Bobby Jindal meets with President Obama

The State Column | Monday, February 28, 2011

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal will met with President Obama late Monday afternoon as part of a national meeting of the nation’s governors.

The Louisiana governor’s office says Mr. Jindal traveled to the governor’s meeting on Sunday and will return to Baton Rouge on Monday after a governors-only sit-down with President Barack Obama. Mr. Jindal also attended a black-tie reception at the White House.

The meeting comes as the nation’s governors attempt to deal with burgeoning budget deficits. A number of states are considering measures similar to those seen in Wisconsin, where Wisconsin governor Scott Walker has proposed ending collective bargaining rights for union workers.

Mr. Jindal, who is seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate, met with the president, just hours after Mr. Obama extended an olive branch to opponents of his health care law. The president said he would allow for states to craft their own health care laws, so long as they meet  federal requirements.

Mr. Jindal has been an outspoken critic of Mr. Obama’s health care reform law, pushing for legal challenges to the law.
