Gov. Haley Barbour attempts to court Mike Huckabee

The State Column | Tuesday, March 29, 2011

Mississippi governor Haley Barbour is looking to persuade former Arkansas Mike Huckabee.

Politico reports the Republican governor has sent representatives to meet with Mr. Huckabee, a possible sign that Mr. Huckabee may end up as part of a presidential ticket, rather than the leading candidate.

Both were in Mississippi on Monday, but aides to both Republicans were cagey and declined to confirm whether the pair sat down together, Politico noted.

Speaking in Mississippi Monday, Mr. Huckabee seemed to shower Mr. Barbour with praise. “No one I’d rather have on my side,” Huckabee said in reference to a question concerning Mr. Barbour’s support. The former Arkansas governor also noted that Mr. Barbour would be “an amazingly strong” presidential candidate.

The possibility of Barbour/Huckabee ticket likely raises eyebrows. The ticket lacks region diversity, a key aspect of modern presidential campaigns.

That said, both Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Barbour have yet to declare their intentions to seek the Republican presidential nomination. Both have confirmed that they are seriously considering a run, adding that a decision is weeks away.
