Mississippi governor Haley Barbour is facing criticism from home over a potential run for president.
The Republican governor is feeling heat from Mississippi lawmakers over his frequent out-of-state trips. Some Mississippi lawmakers have said Barbour’s frequent out-of-state travels are making the budget process more difficult.
The criticism comes as Mr. Barbour returned from trips to California and Nevada. The Republican governor will travel to Iowa Friday and Saturday before returning to the state on Sunday.
Mr. Barbour’s nephew and political advisor, Henry Barbour, played down any criticism. “When he is traveling, he is obviously in contact with the office, and so things are getting done,” Mr. Barbour said.
The Mississippi Republican has spent the past months traveling to a number of primary states in an effort to raise funding, build support and meet with Republican leaders. Mr. Barbour said he won’t make a formal announcement about his plans until the current legislative session ends, but he has hired key staffers in key locations.
