Mississippi governor Haley Barbour is teaming up with an unlikely partner in an effort to create jobs: Former President Bill Clinton.
The Mississippi Republican, who chaired the Republican National Committee while Mr. Clinton was president, announced Friday that he will attend the upcoming Clinton Global Initiative.
“I am looking forward to taking the Clinton Global Initiative model — which has already improved the lives of 300 million people worldwide — and applying it to challenges within the U.S.,” President Clinton said in statement. “Innovative job creation initiatives are being implemented across the country, and CGI America will bring together leaders from all sectors to share their ideas so we can replicate and expand the most successful strategies.”
The announcement comes just months after Mr. Barbour announced he will not seek the Republican presidential nomination. The Mississippi Republican remains one of the most influential members of the Republican Party.
Mr. Barbour traveled to Louisiana over the weekend, speaking to supporters at the Republican Leadership Conference.
“In politics, purity is a loser,” said Mr. Barbour. Whoever wins the nomination, he said, will be “many multiples better than Barack Obama.”
