Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour seemed to offer a policy stance on the war in Afghanistan Sunday, saying the United States is spending far too much in the region.
“I think it is time for the (Obama) administration to take a step back to look at what we’re doing there,” Mr. Barbour said. “If the mission is still to win the war on terrorism, then we need to reconcile why we have 100,000 soldiers there and why we’re spending $2 billion a week.”
The Republican seem to the offer that the job of fighting al-Qaida in Afghanistan could be left to “special operations teams, drones and a tiny fraction of the number of soldiers.”
The Mississippi Republican and potential Republican presidential candidate noted that he is still weighing the possibility of a run for president in 2012. Mr. Barbour said Sunday that he is pleased with the response from the community.
