Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour’s wife says the thought of his running for president “horrifies me” because it would be “a huge sacrifice for a family to make.”
The Mississippi Republican governor, and potential Republican presidential candidate, has floated the possibility of a presidential campaign in recent weeks, traveling to Iowa, Nevada and South Carolina.
“It’s been a lot to be first lady of the state of Mississippi and this would be 50 times bigger,” Marsha Barbour said Thursday.
“It horrifies me,” Ms. Barbor added. “It’s a very overwhelming task and he’s going out and doing some things just to see if he gets that fire in his belly.
Mr. Barbour’s wife makes the comment as the Republican presidential campaign continues to heat up. Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced the formation of presidential exploratory committees earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Mr. Barbour is under scrutiny from Mississippi Democrats as the state attempts to pass a budget. Democrats have slammed the Republican governor for out-of-state trips.
