Jack Markell signs same-sex civil unions bill

The State Column | Friday, May 13, 2011

Delaware governor Jack Markell signed the latest bill granting same-sex couples the right to civil unions, making the bill law Wednesday evening.

“This bill is about a new energy and excitement,” Mr. Markell said. “It’s about a moment in our history that came about because people came together to work for it, because it became clear that Delaware’s LGBT community is in fact part of every Delaware community.”

The Delaware Democrat added, “the greater good is served when we speak out and fight hard when we see that bias, prejudice or even outdated laws attempt to lessen any one of us.”

The bill’s signing comes as lawmakers debated the measure earlier this month, with state Democrats pointing to civil rights victories of the past. State Republicans said the measure would compromise the sanctity of marriage.

The law comes as the recent poll out of Delaware shows growing support for gay marriage and civil unions. A poll released just before the measure’s passage shows 62 percent for civil unions.
