Gov. John Kitzhaber provides capitol office for girlfriend

The State Column | Wednesday, April 27, 2011

In an highly unusual move, Oregon governor John Kitzhaber has provided his female companion with an office at the state Capitol building, allowing her to receive briefings from the governor’s policy staff.

Cylvia Hayes, who is dating Mr. Kitzhaber, shares the office and desk on a part-time basis with Michael Jordan, the state’s chief operating officer. She uses it when she’s doing official first lady work,” Mr. Kitzhaber’s spokesperson said. She uses it “if she’s here working on stuff or traveling with the governor.”

The office is across the reception area, outside of the governor’s office. It is equipped with “a phone, a desk, an outdated lamp and a computer,” Kitzhaber’s spokesperson added.

Mr. Kitzhaber’s ex-wife, Sharon Kitzhaber, who was with him for his first two terms starting in the mid-1990s, also maintained no official office space in the Capitol.
