Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signaled support for a bill making its way through the state Legislature that would legalized gay marriage in the state of Maryland.
The bill seems to have gained significant traction in recent days as a number of Democratic state lawmakers say they plan to support the proposal.
The state is poised to become the sixth state to recognize same-sex marriage as proponents say they believe they have enough support to pass such a measure in the upcoming legislative session.
The state’s attorney general gained national attention when he issued an opinion in support of extending the right to marry to gays living in the state.
in that opinion Attorney General Doug Gansler said he would recognize same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions.
The state would be the latest in a string of states legalizing the institution for gays. California, Iowa, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington have passed laws granting similar rights for gays seeking marriage.
