Maryland officials have confirmed that two packages have exploded at Maryland government buildings.
The two packages exploded at two separate Maryland government buildings on Thursday, lightly injuring one. One package was at the Maryland Department of Transportation in Hanover, Maryland, while the other exploded at the Jeffrey Building near the Maryland State House.
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley was not injured, nor was he near the explosion at the time. Mr. O’Malley is scheduled to be sworn into office in the coming days.
The attack comes as number of state legislatures resume operations in the new year.
A Maryland government spokesman says one of the letters was addressed to Governor Martin O’Malley, while the other was targeting the state Department of Transportation.
The spokesman added that the mailroom, the site of the explosion, was quarantined while state officials investigate the attacks.
At a press conference, the spokesman said there “were indications that [the two packages] were connected.”
