Gov. Mitch Daniels signs budget, tax cuts

The State Column | Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Indiana governor Mitch Daniels spent Monday signing nearly 90 bills into law, including the state budget, a controversial immigration reform measure and cuts to Planned Parenthood.

Mr. Daniels, who is considering a bid for president, signed a new $28 billion state budget into law along with a redistricting measure that will help shape elections for the next decade. The Republican governor also signed two immigration bills Tuesday, include one that denies in-state tuition at state-supported universities for undocumented immigrants. The another immigration reform bill revokes some tax credits for businesses that hire undocumented immigrants.

Among the more controversial measures includes a ban on funding for Planned Parenthood, which the organization and the ACLU said Tuesday it will challenge. The ban comes less than one month after Congress considered cutting funding for the group amidst cries of protests from Democrats.

The bill signings come as the Republican governor seems increasingly likely to enter the 2012 campaign. Mr. Daniels has said he will announce his decision in the coming weeks.
