Hawaii governor Neil Abercrombie said Wednesday he considers the case closed concerning whether President Obama was born in the United States.
The Democratic governor slammed critics, noting his relationship with Mr. Obama’s parents. “President Obama’s mother and father were dear friends of mine, and we must respect their memory,” Mr. Abercrombie said. “It is an insult to the President, his parents and to the Office to suggest that he was not born in Hawaii.”
The Hawaii governor added that the state agency tasked with overseeing the holding of Mr. Obama’s birth records had done everything possible in order to present an accurate picture of the president’s citizenship. “The State of Hawaii has done everything within our legal ability to disabuse these conspiracy theorists,” Mr. Abercrombie said.
The Hawaii governor’s remarks come as Mr. Obama took to the White House press podium in an effort to dispel rumors concerning his birth certificate. “This issue has been going on for two, two-and-a-half years now. I think it started during the campaign,” Mr. Obama said. “I have watched with bemusement, I’ve been puzzled at the degree at which this thing just kept on going.”
