Vermont governor Peter Shumlin said Tuesday that Hurricane Irene has left the state in a state of emergency as rescue crews attempt to assist residents trapped by flood waters.
“We prepared for the worst, so we were expecting both high winds and lots of water. We didn’t get the high winds, we did get tons of water, more than we can absorb,” Mr. Shumlin said.
“We continue to be challenged here. But we’re doing the best we can,” the Vermont Democrat added.
The state continues to face flooding in the wake of Hurricane Irene, which left Vermont with flooded streets and damaged infrastructure.
“We have extraordinary infrastructure damage,” Mr. Shumlin said. “We’re experiencing flooding now in many areas of Vermont that is unprecedented in record keeping.”
On Monday, President Barack Obama declared Vermont a federal disaster area.
