Gov. Rick Scott signs pair of abortion laws

Florida governor Rick Scott has signed into law a pair of controversial abortion laws.

One of them requires women to undergo ultrasounds before getting an abortion, while the other makes it more difficult for minors to get court waivers from Florida’s parental notification law.

The parental-notice measure seeks to tighten restrictions on what is known as judicial “bypass.” That process allows minors to seek court approval for abortions without their parents being notified.

The Florida Republican, who faces one of the lowest approval ratings in the nation, said Sunday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he is not fazed by the high disapproval ratings.

“I don’t look at polls. That’s not what I ran on. I don’t think this job is a popularity contest. This job is how do we make this the best place to do business,” Mr. Scott says.

Mr. Scott’s signing of the measures comes as a number of Republican governors have pushed for tighter restrictions on the procedure. The state of Indiana recently banned funding for Planned Parenthood, a move that was later struck down by the state’s Supreme Court.
