Michigan governor Rick Snyder said Thursday that he does not think an “Arizona-style” immigration reform law is needed in Michigan.
Mr. Snyder told members of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Thursday in Detroit that such a law would “encourage a divisive atmosphere.”
The Michigan Republican governor’s comment comes as a number of state legislatures have adopted laws similar to the one passed and signed into law in Arizona. The controversial immigration reform law remains in legal limbo as the Justice Department continues to challenge the constitutionality of the measure.
Mr. Snyder made the comment in response to a proposal put forth by Michigan lawmakers. The measure would allow law enforcement to inquire on the citizenship status of individuals suspected of living in the country without legal documents.
