Gov. Susana Martinez continues push for immigration reform

The State Column | Thursday, March 24, 2011

New Mexico governor Susana Martinez say she will continue her push for banning undocumented immigrants from obtaining driver’s licences.

A bill to repeal the law cleared the New Mexico House of Representatives this session only to die in the state Senate.

The New Mexico Republican says she will continue in her effort to revoke the licensing law, a push that may have an impact on the 2012 state election. State Democrats continue to control the upper chamber of the legislature while Republicans remain firmly in control of the New Mexico House.

Ms. Martinez, who gained national attention in her push to implement the controversial measure, made immigration reform a key component in her run for governor in 2010. Ms. Martinez became the first female governor of the state, succeeding outgoing governor Bill Richardson.
