Gov. Susana Martinez cuts Cabinet pay

The State Column | Thursday, January 06, 2011

Just days after entering office, New Mexico governor Susana Martinez announced cuts in pay for her Cabinet.

Ms. Martinez said Wednesday that all members of her Cabinet will earn less than their predecessors, a move that will vary depending on an individual’s position.

Overall, Ms. Martinez says she will cut her administration’s pay by an estimated 10 percent. The move follows similar moves by a number of incoming state governors.

The Republican governor explained herĀ decisionĀ in a statement issued.

“Families and small businesses across New Mexico are being forced to balance their budgets and cut back on their spending,” Ms. Martinez said. “It’s time for government to do the same.”

Ms. Martinez was sworn into office earlier this week, replacing outgoing former Governor Bill Richardson.
