New Mexico governor Susana Martinez said Wednesday that she remains confident that the state will combat the Los Alamos fire and that the Los Alamos nuclear facility will remain protected.
“I’m confident in saying that they are committed to making it safe,” Ms. Martinez told ABC News.
The New Mexico governor’s comment comes as firefighting officials continue to battle the Los Alamos blaze. Ms. Martinez’s comment follows reports that the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico, will be spared from a fire raging in the vicinity, the Los Alamos fire chief told CNN Wednesday.
Concerns were raised Wednesday the fire closed in the on the facility. The Los Alamos National Laboratory was evacuated earlier this week after the blaze grew quickly overnight.
“Laboratory facilities will be closed for all activities and nonessential employees are directed to remain off site,” the lab said in a statement.
Ms. Martinez has already declared a state of emergency, ordering in state National Guard troops and requesting assistance from the federal government.
New Mexico Reps. Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich announced Monday that they have sent a letter to the House Appropriations Committee, urging support for emergency funding for the United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of Interior.
