Gov. Terry Branstad: Ron Paul is looking good

The State Column | Tuesday, January 03, 2012

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is providing a boost to Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul, telling supporters to not discount the Texas congressman.

“You don’t want to underestimate Congressman Ron Paul,” said the Iowa Republican on Monday. “The more you know, the more unsure sometimes you get about who you might think might be the very best.”

Mr. Branstad, who has yet to endorse any of the Republican candidates for president, said Monday that any of the Republican contenders would make a better president than President Obama.

Polls continue to show growing support for a number of candidates within the Republican field. A series of polls released overt the weekend continue to show former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Mr. Paul, and former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Rick Santorum among the leading candidates. Mr. Santorum has surged to the top tier in recent weeks, aided in part by a growing discontent of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s campaign.

On Monday, Mr. Paul acknowledged the skyrocketing support that could propel him to victory, adding that he remains focused on building support for his message.

“We, the people, are growing and I’m optimistic,” Mr. Paul said from Davenport, Iowa, on Monday. “The enthusiasm is growing by leaps and bounds and crowds are getting bigger.”

“As far as I’m concerned, there’s only one issue,” Mr. Paul added. “There’s one issue that has made America great, an issue that you can answer all your questions on is individual liberty.”
