Gov. Tom Corbett reacts to Penn State sex scandal

The State Column | Monday, November 14, 2011

Pennsylvania governor Tom Corbett appeared on Fox News Sunday, voicing his opinions about the Penn State University child sex abuse scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who was released from jail on a $100,000 unsecured bail last week.

Though he said former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno and graduate assistant Mike McQueary did not break any laws by not notifying police, he was critical of their inaction involving such a horrendous crime.

“I’ve always have said that actions speak louder than words. That should not have been able to continue,” said Corbett during his Fox News appearance.

Corbett served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania from 2004-2008, and refused to comment on whether the Sandusky case was under surveillance during his time as attorney general.

“When you don’t follow through, when you don’t make sure actions were taken, that would make me lose confidence in your ability to lead and that’s the case here,” said Corbett.

The republican governor was critical of the quick release of Sandusky on bail as well, claiming he would have asked for a higher bail amount and more stipulations regarding Sandusky’s release.

At a press conference Monday morning at Lower Dauphin High School, Corbett expressed his frustration with the inability of Pennsylvania state laws to truly make a difference in the case, as the state does not require citizens to directly report potential abuse to police.

“Every one of the legislators are upset about what was reported and what happened,” said Corbett. “It’s fine for universities to have their own police who must answer to administrators, but their work should be reviewed periodically.”
