Minnesota congresswoman and Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann took aim at her Republican opponent, Texas governor Rick Perry, blasting his support for a series of controversial immigration reform policies.
“Perry, Iowa, is dealing with the consequences of our weak immigration laws,” Bachmann campaign spokeswoman Alice Stewart told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday. “It’s fitting for Michele to go there and highlight her strong stance on immigration reform, which includes building a fence, enforce existing laws, no amnesty, and no magnets to lure illegals to this country.”
Mr. Perry, who has paralleled Ms. Bachmann’s slide in the polls, has repeatedly pushed back against assertions put forth by the Minnesota Republican.
“Are we going to kick these people to the side of the road and let them become tax wasters? Or are we going to give them an opportunity to go to an institution of higher learning, pay full in-state tuition, which we do, and require them to pursue citizenship? The issue was really driven by economics,” Mr. Perry said, addressing a controversial plan in Texas allowing undocumented immigrants to enroll in public schools.
