Speaking Friday, Vice President Joe Biden said that the willingness of House Republicans to obstruct measures supported by the Obama administration will, in the end, benefit Democrats seeking re-election in 2012.
Speaking to House Democrats gathered in Maryland for a three-day retreat, Mr. Biden said voterswill reject Republican unwillingness to compromise and its blatant determination to make President Obama a one-term president. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said that ensuring Obama’s defeat is a priority, noting that he would seek to make 2012 the president’s “Waterloo.”
“These guys are helping us by saying what they believe,” said Mr. Biden “We need this to be rung out. Their America vs. our America.”
The vice president said that he predicts House Democrats will retake the lower chamber in November, adding that he also remains confident that President Obama will win re-election.
“I really do think we’re going to win back the House,” said Mr. Biden. “I think we will win based purely on the merits of our positions.”
The Delaware Democrat also noted that he views the economy and job creation as key policy difference between the two parties. Mr. Biden said the Democrats should craft a message that reflects their commitment to creating jobs and lowering the nation’s rate of unemployment.
“The big difference between us and them, I think, can be distilled down to a phrase,” Mr. Biden said. “We are strongly supportive of the private sector. They’re strongly supportive of the privileged sector.”
Mr. Biden’s prediction comes as House Democrats and House Republicans remain at odds over a number of key proposals. With the 2012 election looming, and a number of Senate seats in play, it remains unclear whether congressional lawmakers will pass any of significant importance.
