Joe the Plumber announces bid for Congress

The State Column | Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Joe the Plumber is running for Congress.

The Ohio Republican — better known as Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher — captured national attention and was made famous during the 2008 campaign after criticizing then-candidate Barack Obama during a trip to the state. Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, invited Mr. Wurzelbacher to join him on the campaign trail.

Speaking Wednesday, Mr. Wurzelbacher announced his 2012 bid, telling supporters that he will advocate for limited government and reduced federal spending.

“Politicians keep playing politics with our lives. I’m sick and tired of it. I thought long and hard about running and why I would do it,” said Mr. Wurzelbacher, in an announcement video posted on YouTube. “I’m not the kind of plumber who uses duct tape.”

“Going around the country for the last three years, there are a lot of people who would make great statesmen, … but unfortunately they don’t have the name recognition, but they can’t get the money,” Mr. Wurzelbacher added.

Mr. Wurzelbacher will challenge Ohio Democrat Rep. Marcy Kaptur. The Ohio Democrat is seen as vulnerable after a 2010 redistricting plan was announced earlier this year. Ms. Kaptur will face a challenge from Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who saw his seat eliminated in the redistricting process.
