John Boehner refuses to comment on Newt Gingrich's rise

The State Column | Wednesday, December 07, 2011

House Speaker John Boehner said Wednesday he remains committed to trying to create jobs, rather than commenting on former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s recent rise in the polls.

My job is focused on what the American people want us to deal with, and that’s jobs,” Boehner said when asked about Mr. Gingrich Wednesady morning. “That’s our message every single day.”

“Listen, Newt’s been a longtime friend, but I’ve spent a lot of time this year avoiding getting involved in picking winners or losers in a presidential contest,” Mr. Boehner added. “And as I say, our focus here is on the American people’s priority and that’s jobs.”

The Ohio Republican, who has a complicated with the Georgia Republican, has remained noncommittal during the 2012 race for the Republican nomination. Meanwhile, a series of recent polls show support for Mr. Gingrich’s 2012 campaign on the rise. The Georgia Republican is widely considered the front-runner for the nomination in Iowa and South Carolina. Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 contender Mitt Romney is widely seen as the front-runner in New Hampshire, where he has spent the past several months campaigning.
