John Boehner: U.S. should hold Iran’s ‘feet to the fire’

The State Column | Thursday, October 13, 2011

Speaking Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner called on the Obama administration to increase pressure on Iran, following revelations of an alleged terror plot.

The Obama administration should hold Iran’s “feet to the fire” for the alleged plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, Mr. Boehner said on Wednesday. U.S. officials have said there could be a push for a new round of sanctions on Iran for its efforts to assassinate Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir on U.S. soil.

“I don’t think I need to be specific in terms of what the administration could or should do,” Mr. Boehner said. “But I’m hopeful that the administration will hold them accountable for their actions.”

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Mr. Boehner called the plot “a very serious breach of international behavior.”

Top Obama administration officials, including Vice President Joe Biden, have said all options “remain on the table,” noting that the alleged plot to kill the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States is “unacceptable.”

Mr. Boehner would not divulge whether the response should include a military element, but said that the plot demonstrates that the threat of terrorism is still prevalent and was only uncovered thanks to investments in the country’s intelligence agencies.
