Jon Huntsman fails to qualify for Arizona ballot

The State Column | Tuesday, January 10, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman is hoping for a strong top tier finish in the New Hampshire Republican primary election Tuesday, and his campaign team is trying to recover from a paperwork mistake that could keep him off of the Arizona Republican primary ballot in Februrary.

The Associated Press reports that Mr. Huntsman failed to provide a notarized signature to accompany his paperwork filed Monday prior to the 5 p.m. deadline in Arizona.

A spokesman for Arizona Secretary of State Ken Burnett confirmed Mr. Huntsman’s paperwork blunder Monday.

Mr. Huntsman’s rival Republican presidential candidates Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney have all qualified for the Arizona Republican primary election and will be included on the ballot.

Despite the signature mishap, the former Utah governor will seek an appeal to still have his name included on the ballot.

“We completed the required paperwork and are challenging the ruling. We will be on the ballot,” said Mr. Huntsman’s campaign spokesman Tim Miller.

The Arizona Republican primary election is scheduled for February 28th, the same date as the Michigan Republican primary election.

Mr. Huntsman was also one of remaining Republican presidential candidates that did not qualify to be included on the March 6th Virginia Republican primary election. He has joined part of a lawsuit filed by Texas Governor Republican Rick Perry, seeking a special exception from the Virginia Republican Party to be included on the Virginia ballot.

For Tuesday Mr. Huntsman remains focused on the New Hampshire Republican primary election. He has staked his chances at the winning the 2012 Republican nomination on his results in the Granite state. The former Utah governor skipped campaigning in Iowa and has been focusing on aggressively courting voters in New Hampshire since October.

The Public Polling Policy poll of New Hampshire voters released Sunday projects Mr. Huntsman battling Texas congressman Ron Paul for a second place finish behind former Massachusetts Mitt Romney.
