The Associated Press has called the Kentucky election, saying incumbent governor Steve Beshear has won re-election.
The race was called after Mr. Beshear won nearly 51 percent of the vote. With around a third of precincts reporting, Mr. Beshear had about 60 percent of the vote and Williams had about 30 percent. Independent Gatewood Galbraith had 10 percent.
Following a day of campaigning, the Beshear campaign expressed confidence in their chances of winning re-election.
“The governor voted at 10:30 this morning in his home precinct of Winchester. Then, he went back home and called around to some supporters to see how things were going. Then he met with some of his family, which came out of town for this event,” said Mr. Beshear’s campaign spokesman.
The victory for Mr. Beshear comes as the Kentucky Democrat faced off against Republican challenger State Senate President David Williams. One poll showed Mr. Beshear well ahead of Mr. Williams by 25 percentage points. Independent candidate Gatewood Galbraith was also running against the Kentucky Democrat.
The race in Kentucky centered largely on the state economy, with Williams criticizing Beshear’s record on creating jobs and balancing the state budget.
