Alaska U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski said Wednesday that a failure to raise the nation’s debt limit would be a disaster.
“We need to be solving the problem,” Ms. Murkowski said, “not trying to one-up the other side.”
The Alaska Republican’s comment comes as President Obama and House Republican continue to debate raising the nation’s debt limit as an August 2 deadline quickly approaches.
Ms. Murkowski, a Republican, said Republicans should consider compromising, noting that a failure to raise the nation’s debt limit would result in a fiscal disaster.
“Nobody wins by us failing to resolve the issue of our debt, our spending, and how we face this debt limit. Nobody wins,” Ms. Murskowski said. “We need to be worried about the future of the country and not about political futures, and I do think there are some who are concerned because there’s going to be some very difficult decisions that will have to be made.”
The Alaska Republican rejected calls from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, saying she does not support giving President Obama wide-ranging power to unilaterally raise the debt limit.
